Today started with an early morning visit to Mount Rushmore and let us tell you, this is the time to visit! We barely saw another car on the approaching road, which was filled with tourist destinations that must be jam packed in the warmer months (in non-pandemic years). We zoomed past it all and strolled right up to the base of the monument. It was magnificent. Although the size was not quite as large as we were anticipating, the feat of carving such perfect likenesses of our past presidents out of the side of a mountain was impressive.
We also took a quick detour to take a photo of the in-progress (since 1948!) Crazy Horse Memorial: equally impressive, and amazing to imagine how it will look as the sculpting continues in the upcoming decades.
Then it was off to Bozeman to reunite with Charlie! We somehow managed to fit him and his bags into the already-stuffed car, and continue on to Idaho Falls where we’ll stay for the night. We’re pretty sure Phoenix doesn’t mind sharing the limited space with him.
